Zimbabwe Moves To Strengthen Cyber Security With AI Cyber Shield
ZIMBABWE is set to launch an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cyber Shield within the next 12 months, as Government intensifies efforts to counter emerging cyber threats and strengthen digital security.
The development emerged during the Cyberfraud and AI Summit held in Nyanga, where security experts, policymakers and technology innovators gathered to discuss opportunities and risks associated with artificial intelligence.
Tatenda Mavetera said Government is moving to counter AI-driven cyber threats through the proposed initiative, which will complement the National AI Strategy and promote cyber awareness nationwide.
“The same artificial intelligence that powers innovation is now being weaponised by fraudsters. Deep fakes, automated phishing, voice cloning and adaptive malware are evolving faster than traditional defences. Our response must be equally intelligent, equally fast and equally scalable, hence the theme AI versus AI. Therefore, I announce that the Government of Zimbabwe will, within the next 12 months, launch the Zimbabwe AI Cyber Shield,” she said.
Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) Director General, Dr Gift Machengete, noted that Zimbabwe’s existing legal framework is already robust enough to effectively tackle the rising threats that come with AI.
“We are working on developing ethical guidelines to safeguard against biases and ensure the responsible use of AI technologies. We must combine visionary thinking with decisive action to ensure that AI serves as a force for good in Zimbabwe, driving progress, inclusivity, and resilience.”
The summit was also described as a platform to formulate strategic solutions and anticipate future challenges arising from the rapid integration of artificial intelligence.
Cybersecurity expert and summit convenor, Dr Whisper Rukanda, said the meeting provided a platform to craft strategic solutions and anticipate future challenges arising from the rapid integration of artificial intelligence.
“As we embrace the transformative power of AI, we must remain vigilant against its potential for exploitation. Our focus is on building a digital environment where innovation and security coexist, ensuring that every Zimbabwean is protected from the evolving tactics of AI-driven cyber fraud,” he said.
The summit follows the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (202-2030) by President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa last month, aimed at accelerating the adoption and integration of AI across various sectors of the economy
